Your brake pedal is the top of a sealed hydraulic column. Press it and fluid — which does not compress — pushes the pads against the rotors. A pedal that feels soft, travels further than it used to, or sinks slowly to the floor under steady pressure means something in that column is giving way: fluid escaping through a leak, air compressing where fluid should be, or the master cylinder's internal seals letting fluid slip past the piston.
This symptom sits apart from every other brake complaint because of how it fails. Worn pads get noisy and gradually worse; a hydraulic fault can hold at “mostly works” right up until it doesn't. That is why the advice here is blunt where the squealing-brakes advice is relaxed.

- Open the reservoir cap area (do not add anything yet) and read the level against MIN/MAX. A dropping level means a leak, and leaks only get worse.
- With the engine off, press and hold the pedal firmly for 30 seconds. Sinking under steady pressure with no leak points at the master cylinder.
- Check the inner face of each wheel and the ground under each corner for wet streaks. Brake fluid is thin, clear to light amber, and slightly oily.
- Note whether pumping the pedal firms it up. Yes points to air or a leak; no, with steady sinking, points to the master cylinder.
What to say at the shop
- Ask which component failed and to be shown the wet evidence of the leak, or the pressure-test result for a master cylinder.
- Ask whether the fluid was contaminated and whether a full flush is included in the repair — after a hydraulic failure it should be.
- If they recommend the master cylinder, ask whether the booster was checked too; the symptoms overlap and the parts do not.
- This is one repair where declining the fix and driving anyway is not an option worth discussing.

Can I drive carefully with a soft pedal?
No. The failure mode of a hydraulic fault is not “gradually worse,” it is “fine until it isn't.” A tow costs a fraction of the mildest possible outcome of a pedal that reaches the floor in traffic. This site is casual about a lot of symptoms; not this one.
Why does my pedal firm up when I pump it?
Pumping moves extra fluid into the system faster than the fault can bleed pressure away, temporarily taking up the slack caused by air or a leak. It is a useful diagnostic tell and an emergency technique — not a workaround to keep using.
The pedal went soft after new pads were fitted. Coincidence?
Probably not. If the caliper pistons were pushed back without care, or the system was opened and bled sloppily, air gets in and the pedal goes spongy. Take it straight back to whoever did the work — this is their problem to fix at their cost.
