A hum, drone, or growl that scales with road speed — not engine speed — comes from something rotating with the wheels: the tires or the wheel bearings. The gearshift test separates road speed from engine speed instantly: coast in neutral, and if the noise continues unchanged, the engine is innocent.
The weave test then separates bearing from tire. On an empty road, sway gently within your lane. A wheel bearing's noise changes as weight shifts — loading the bad bearing quiets or loudens it — because the noise depends on how hard the worn races are pressed together. How long can I drive on a humming wheel bearing?
Bearings usually give weeks to months of noisy warning, and the noise level tracks the wear. The risk curve is not linear though: a bearing at the end develops play, can overheat, damage the hub and ABS sensor, and in the rare worst case let the wheel tilt. Humming = book it; grinding, play, or an ABS light joining in = now.
Why does the noise change when I turn slightly?
Cornering shifts the car's weight between left and right wheels. Loading a worn bearing presses its damaged races together harder and changes the noise; unloading it gives relief. Tire noise is indifferent to gentle weight shifts — which is exactly what makes the weave test so cleanly diagnostic.
