The popular word is “warped,” but rotors almost never warp like a vinyl record. What actually happens is either uneven pad material transferred onto the disc face (often after hard braking followed by holding the pedal at a stop, cooking a pad-print into the rotor) or uneven wear from rust patches and sticking hardware.

The distinction matters because it changes the fix. True thickness variation is measured with a micrometer in a minute, and the honest menu is: machine the rotors if enough material remains, or replace them if not. A shop that says “warped” and quotes replacement without measuring is skipping the step that decides whether you needed to.

Are 'warped rotors' a real thing?

As commonly meant — a disc bent like a potato chip from heat — essentially no on modern brakes. The pulse is real; the mechanism is thickness variation from uneven deposits and wear. It matters because deposits can sometimes be fixed cheaply, and because whatever caused uneven wear (usually a sticking caliper) needs fixing too, or the new rotors inherit the fault.

Is it safe to keep driving with a brake pulse?

In the short term the brakes still work, so it is a book-it-soon rather than a stop-now. But thickness variation grows with use, the pulsing degrades braking on rough surfaces where ABS gets involved, and the vibration accelerates wear in the suspension it shakes. The repair does not get cheaper with time.

Can new brake pads alone fix the shaking?

No — the variation is in the rotor face, and new pads will simply be shaped by it while the pulse continues. Pads-only quotes for a pulsation complaint are a sign the diagnosis was skipped.
