What P0300 means
The computer watches crankshaft speed for the tiny stumble each misfire causes. P0300 means misfires are happening across multiple cylinders or too scattered to pin on one — the engine is repeatedly failing to burn its fuel, and that fuel is going into the exhaust.
What you’ll notice
- Rough running or shaking, worst at idle
- Hesitation or power loss
- Check engine light — flashing when misfires are active and severe
- Fuel smell from the exhaust

Can you drive with P0300?
If the light is flashing, no — active multi-cylinder misfire is the specific condition that destroys catalytic converters in real time. Steady light and mild symptoms: short, gentle trips to diagnosis only.
The misdiagnosis to avoid
Throwing plugs and coils at a P0300 without asking why all cylinders misfire. Single-cylinder codes point at that cylinder's parts; P0300's randomness points at shared systems — fuel pressure, intake air, timing. The parts-cannon approach costs a full ignition set before anyone checks fuel pressure.

ANCEL AD310 Classic OBD2 Scanner
The glovebox tool. Wired, no app, no pairing, no batteries — plug it in and it reads and clears engine codes. This is the one that saves you a diagnostic fee the first time the check engine light comes on. Its limits are honest: engine codes only, no ABS or airbag, no live graphing.
Best for: Anyone who just wants to know what the light means

Pairs with your phone and reads far more than engine codes — ABS, airbag, transmission and HVAC on most vehicles — plus live data. The real feature is the repair reports, which map a code to the fixes that most often resolved it on your specific year, make, model and engine. No subscription.
Best for: Owners keeping a car past warranty, or checking used cars

The enthusiast pick. Faster live data than most dongles and it works with a wide range of third-party apps, which matters if you want custom dashboards or logging. Well regarded for connection stability and for not draining the battery when left plugged in.
Best for: People who want live data and app flexibility

What's the difference between P0300 and P0301?
P0301 names cylinder 1 specifically; P0300 means the pattern is spread across cylinders or too random to attribute. That distinction is the first fork in diagnosis: specific cylinder = that cylinder's coil/plug/injector; random = something all cylinders share.
Can bad gas cause P0300?
Yes — water-contaminated or very stale fuel misfires randomly by nature, and it's one of the few causes that genuinely self-resolves with a couple of fresh tanks. If the code arrived right after a fill-up at an unfamiliar station, run it low, refill elsewhere, and see.
Why is it worse in the rain?
Moisture finds weak ignition insulation. Aged plug wires and cracked coil boots leak spark to ground when humid, misfiring randomly in exactly the way P0300 describes. Rain-correlated misfires are practically an ignition-insulation diagnosis by themselves.
