What P0442 means
The EVAP self-test held vacuum almost — but decay revealed a small leak, on the order of a millimetre. The usual suspects are the fuel cap's seal and age-hardened rubber connections in the vapour plumbing.
What you’ll notice
- Check engine light only, as a rule
- Faint fuel smell sometimes
- Emissions failure

Can you drive with P0442?
Entirely. This is arguably the least consequential code a car can set — which is not the same as ignoring the light that could later be hiding a code that matters.
The misdiagnosis to avoid
Authorising a smoke test before the free cap ritual: reseat (or $15-replace) the cap, then give it several days of driving to self-clear. Only a light that survives that deserves paid diagnosis — where the smoke machine will find a small leak quickly.
Describe what it’s doing in your own words and the symptom checker gives you a safe-to-drive verdict, ranked causes with costs, and notes to take to the shop — free, no sign-up.

ANCEL AD310 Classic OBD2 Scanner
The glovebox tool. Wired, no app, no pairing, no batteries — plug it in and it reads and clears engine codes. This is the one that saves you a diagnostic fee the first time the check engine light comes on. Its limits are honest: engine codes only, no ABS or airbag, no live graphing.
Best for: Anyone who just wants to know what the light means

Pairs with your phone and reads far more than engine codes — ABS, airbag, transmission and HVAC on most vehicles — plus live data. The real feature is the repair reports, which map a code to the fixes that most often resolved it on your specific year, make, model and engine. No subscription.
Best for: Owners keeping a car past warranty, or checking used cars

The enthusiast pick. Faster live data than most dongles and it works with a wide range of third-party apps, which matters if you want custom dashboards or logging. Well regarded for connection stability and for not draining the battery when left plugged in.
Best for: People who want live data and app flexibility

Why does the light take days to go out after I fix it?
The EVAP self-test only runs under specific conditions — fuel level in a certain band, temperature in range, a cold start followed by particular driving. The system needs to pass the test a few times before clearing the code, and it may take days to even attempt it. Patience is part of this repair.
Small leak, large leak — do the sizes matter?
They aim the search: small-leak codes (P0442/P0456) point at seals, o-rings, and pinholes; the large-leak code (P0455) points at things left open or disconnected — a cap left off, a hose popped free. Same system, different search image, and the code number sets it.
