What P0715 means

The transmission computes slip and shift timing by comparing input shaft speed with output speed. P0715 means the input-side sensor's signal is faulty — and a transmission that can't see its input speed shifts on guesswork or retreats into limp mode.

The transmission locks into a single safe gear and fixed pressures so no shift can be mistimed into a clutch-burning slip. It feels alarming — high revs, no upshifts — but it's the transmission protecting itself with the data it has left. Treat it as a courtesy tow you're allowed to drive slowly.

Sensor or transmission — how do I know which I'm facing?

The sensor test is electrical and quick, which is the good news: resistance and signal checks convict or clear it cheaply. If the sensor tests healthy and clean, attention turns inward — but the large majority of P0715s end at the sensor or its wiring, not the gearbox.
