What P0730 means

The transmission commanded a gear, then compared input and output speeds — and the math didn't match any gear it owns. Something is slipping: fluid pressure isn't holding a clutch pack at its ratio. Of the common transmission codes, this one points most directly at real mechanical slip.

What does the fluid tell the shop?

Nearly everything, first: level and condition explain hydraulic slip cheaply; the pan's magnet distinguishes normal gray paste from the flakes and friction-material confetti of dying clutches. A ratio code's prognosis is largely written in the pan — insist the inspection includes dropping it.

It only slips in one gear. Meaning?

Usefully specific: each gear is held by a particular clutch/band combination, so single-gear slip names its own hardware — and single-ratio codes (P0731–P0734) name it in the code number. One bad gear can also be one sticking solenoid; the pressure test separates them. Either way it's better news than everywhere-slip.
