What P0741 means
The computer commands converter lockup, the circuit responds — and measured slip across the converter stays anyway. The lockup clutch physically can't hold: worn friction material, contaminated fluid glazing it, or pressure not arriving. This is P0740's mechanical sibling.
What you’ll notice
- Shudder at steady light throttle around 40–60 mph — like rumble strips that aren't there
- Highway RPM higher than remembered
- Economy down
- Warm-running transmission

Can you drive with P0741?
Yes — with the shudder as your gauge. Mild and occasional: book it soon. Worsening or constant: sooner, because the slipping clutch is depositing its friction material into the fluid that lubricates everything else.
The misdiagnosis to avoid
Skipping the fluid service attempt. TCC shudder from degraded fluid is common enough that a proper fluid exchange (with the manufacturer-specified fluid — converter clutches are friction-formulated to it) is the recognised first repair. Many P0741 shudders end there; the converter quote belongs after that attempt, not before.

ANCEL AD310 Classic OBD2 Scanner
The glovebox tool. Wired, no app, no pairing, no batteries — plug it in and it reads and clears engine codes. This is the one that saves you a diagnostic fee the first time the check engine light comes on. Its limits are honest: engine codes only, no ABS or airbag, no live graphing.
Best for: Anyone who just wants to know what the light means

Pairs with your phone and reads far more than engine codes — ABS, airbag, transmission and HVAC on most vehicles — plus live data. The real feature is the repair reports, which map a code to the fixes that most often resolved it on your specific year, make, model and engine. No subscription.
Best for: Owners keeping a car past warranty, or checking used cars

The enthusiast pick. Faster live data than most dongles and it works with a wide range of third-party apps, which matters if you want custom dashboards or logging. Well regarded for connection stability and for not draining the battery when left plugged in.
Best for: People who want live data and app flexibility

Why does the shudder happen at exactly the same speeds?
Those speeds are where the computer applies partial or full lockup at light throttle — the clutch's hardest grip-versus-slip moment. A marginal clutch grabs-releases-grabs there, felt as shudder. Above and below, lockup is either off or the load is different, so the symptom lives in a band.
Is the specified fluid really that important?
For converter clutches, genuinely — lockup friction behaviour is engineered against a specific fluid's friction modifiers. 'Universal' fluid close-enough elsewhere can cause or worsen TCC shudder specifically. Any P0741 fluid service should name the exact spec on the invoice.
