The battery-shaped warning light is misnamed in a way that matters: it doesn't mean the battery is bad, it means the battery is no longer being charged. The alternator — or the belt spinning it — has stopped doing its job, and the car is now running its ignition, injection, lights and computers on stored battery charge alone. That store is finite: typically somewhere between thirty and ninety minutes of driving, less at night with lights and blower running.
This gives the battery light a unique character among warning lamps: the car feels completely normal while a countdown runs. The right response is to treat the remaining charge as range — drive directly to a shop, a parts store, or home, shedding electrical load on the way (A/C off, blower down, accessories off; keep the headlights if it's dark — being visible outranks the minutes). The one escalation: if the temperature gauge climbs too, the shared belt may have failed, and that's a pull-over.

How far can I drive with the battery light on?
Plan for 30–60 minutes of mixed driving, less at night or in rain with everything running, sometimes more on a big healthy battery. But it's a countdown you can't read precisely, and it ends with a car dead wherever it happens to be — so the honest answer is: as far as the nearest place that can test it, by the most direct route, right now.
The light flickers on and off. Does that make it less serious?
It makes it earlier, not less serious. Flicker means charging is marginal — worn brushes making intermittent contact, a belt slipping when loads spike, a connection moving with vibration. Marginal becomes failed on its own schedule, often within days. Same response, better odds: get it tested while it still drives there.
