Ethylene glycol — the base of most engine coolant — has a distinctive sweet, syrupy smell, and a hot engine bay turns even a small leak into a scent you notice at stoplights. - For a heater core quote, ask for the labour hours — the spread between cars is enormous and the number explains the quote.
- Ask whether bypassing a failed heater core is a legitimate stopgap on your car if the repair must wait (you lose heat; you keep the coolant).
