What P0172 means
The mirror image of P0171: the oxygen sensors report more fuel than the air can burn, and the computer has trimmed as far lean as it can without catching up. Something is over-fuelling — or the sensors metering air and temperature are lying rich.

Drivable short-term, but rich running dilutes engine oil with fuel and poisons the catalytic converter — the countdown is on the expensive parts downstream, not the drive home.
The misdiagnosis to avoid
Ignoring it because the car drives fine. Rich faults are quiet spenders: economy sags a little, oil dilutes a little, and months later the catalyst is clogged and the P0420 arrives with a four-figure quote. Rich codes are cheapest exactly when they're new.

Can a dirty air filter cause P0172?
A severely choked filter pushes toward rich, though on modern metered engines the computer compensates for a lot of it. It's still the free first look — but a P0172 usually needs one of the metering or fuel-side causes above.
Why is my oil level rising?
That's fuel dilution — over-injected gasoline washing past the rings into the sump. A rising dipstick with a gasoline smell is a rich condition confirmed and a change-the-oil-with-the-repair situation; diluted oil protects the engine noticeably worse.
