Black smoke is soot: fuel that entered the cylinders and didn't find enough air to burn. On a gasoline engine that means the mixture is rich — either the engine is being fed too much fuel (a leaking injector, a faulty sensor lying to the computer) or it cannot breathe enough air to match (a choked air filter). You will usually see companions: fuel economy visibly worse, a gasoline smell in the exhaust, maybe rough running or a check engine light with rich-mixture codes.
The cost of ignoring it compounds quietly. Excess fuel washes lubricating oil off the cylinder walls, dilutes the engine oil, and feeds the catalytic converter a diet that eventually clogs and overheats it — converting a $50 sensor fault into a four-figure catalyst bill. It also fails emissions tests decisively. The causes, fortunately, start very cheap.

Cost bands are broad US independent-shop estimates, parts and labour. Dealers run higher; your car and region move the numbers.
What you can check yourself
- Open the airbox and look at the filter against light. If you can't see light through it, replace it and re-evaluate — genuinely sometimes the whole fix.
- Get codes read (free at parts stores). Rich codes (P0172/P0175) or sensor codes aim the repair; their absence is information too.
- Smell the dipstick. Oil that smells strongly of gasoline means fuel dilution — worth an oil change alongside whatever fix, and worth telling the shop.
- Note when it smokes: constant (system-wide cause) versus only at hard throttle (mixture margin) versus with a misfire (single injector).
What to say at the shop
- Bring the codes and the filter answer; ask for the fuel trim numbers — long-term trim strongly negative confirms rich and hints how rich.
- If an injector is suspected, ask whether a cleaning service is worth one attempt before replacement — depends on the engine, but worth the question.
- Ask whether the oil was checked for fuel dilution and whether a change is included.
- If the catalyst is condemned in the same visit, ask whether the rich fault came first — fix the cause before the expensive effect, and the effect's diagnosis deserves its own evidence.

Is black smoke bad for the engine?
Progressively. The smoke itself is soot exiting; the harm is upstream: fuel washing oil off cylinder walls accelerates wear, fuel diluting the oil weakens it everywhere, and the catalyst downstream is slowly poisoned. Weeks of it is money and margin; months of it starts writing real bills.
Why is my fuel economy terrible at the same time?
Same fault, two symptoms. The mixture is rich, so a chunk of every gallon exits unburned as the soot you can see. Fixing the cause typically claws back all of the lost mileage, which quietly pays for a lot of $150 sensors.

A brief puff under hard load is normal diesel behaviour, especially on older engines — diesels run smoky at the rich edge by design.
