Why does my transmission shift badly with a speed sensor code?

Shift points are chosen from vehicle speed; without it, the transmission falls back on crude defaults — holding gears too long, slamming shifts, sometimes locking into a limp gear. The transmission is healthy; it's driving blind. Fixing the sensor typically restores it completely.

Is this the same as an ABS wheel speed sensor?

Related family, different job. On many modern cars the vehicle-speed signal is actually computed from the ABS wheel sensors, so a wheel sensor fault can cascade into P0500 — while older designs use a dedicated transmission-output sensor. The diagnosis starts by finding out which architecture yours is.
